Primitives Biodesign is a biomaterials company working to reduce plastics pollution by replacing petroleum-based products with new engineered material systems from biologically
derived sources. We are a distributed team of diverse and mission-oriented bio designers, engineers, makers, and physicists who are energized by complex challenges.

Currently, we are seeking an environmental biologist contractor/consultant to join the team on-site in downtown San Francisco, CA for a 4-month project, with the possibility of extension. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, reliable, collaborative, and sustainability-minded. You will be responsible for leading our materials degradation platform and conducting experiments in vivo and in situ to ensure new material systems are compatible across waste streams.

Duties and Responsibilities:

● Develop procedures for rapid in vivo materials degradation experiments and work with the materials engineering team to rapidly iterate
● Design, execute, and conduct field experiments and provide recommendations for material-waste stream compatibility and product end-of-life assignations
● Prepare and communicate environmental impact reports
● Contribute to environmental regulatory approval efforts and support nonprofit partner relationships
● Staying current with emerging environmental policies and regulations on plastics bans, public concerns

Education & Experience:

● Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Microbiology, Environmental Science, Food Science, Biomedical Engineering, Ecology, or related field
● Minimum 2-3 years related work experience in biological/environmental projects and tasks
● Familiarity with biodegradability, compostability & ecotoxicity metrics and experimental procedures
● Ability to communicate effectively with audiences at all levels

Working knowledge of the following a plus:

● Materials Science and Engineering
● Life cycle analysis and plastics supply chain
● Waste management capabilities of different municipalities
● Environmental regulations and policy
● Understanding of plastic pollution problem
● BPI Certification process
● Familiarity with ASTM testing
