John Cumbers is the founder of SynBioBeta, which organizes conferences, a news digest, educational courses and events for the synthetic biology industry. He is also the host of the SynBioBeta Podcast and works with startup companies, investors and partners to foster the growth of the industry. In 2011 he started the SynBio Launchpad, an incubator for synthetic biology companies.
John received his PhD in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry from Brown University. He also has a master’s degree in Bioinformatics from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and an undergraduate degree in computer science from the University of Hull in England. In 2005 he founded the iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machines competition) team at Brown University and was an iGEM ambassador to China in 2006/2007. In addition to his work with startup companies he is also part of the Space Synthetic Biology Program at NASA where he works on mission design for space resource utilization and life support.
